From 10 -12 March 2016 all doors of the Van Eyck will be open again for the third edition of the Open Studios. The participating artists, designers, architects, curators, writers and poets present their work in their studios, the exhibition spaces and other areas of the Van Eyck. They all have had a one-year stay (or thereabout) at the institute. A book published by Onomatopee in the aftermath of our research project INTO LONGING, VAST ROCK. Throughout this publication, situations and visual scenarios, co-production and dialogue run hand in hand with final works. Against the backdrop of antagonistic dynamics such as absence and presence, the sublime and the real, underground and popular culture, it features insightful texts by L.A. critic Jan Tumlir, Dutch philosopher Rene Gabriels and an introduction by Onomatopee director Freek Lomme which articulates the committed roles of viewer and artwork. By representing the work as well as analytically mapping and experimentally expanding our cultural longing, this book creates a vibrant horizon for indentification.
